Courtesy of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skagitriverjournal.com\/\">Skagit River Journal<\/a> via University of Washington<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you identify who&#8217;s in these photos and were in those &#8220;social clubs&#8221; at the time, their families today prolly <em>still <\/em>own the farmland, <em>still<\/em> call themselves &#8220;farmers&#8221; while exploiting the actual farmworkers or &#8220;blue collar&#8221; while managing a franchise restaurant or car dealership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, their descendants prolly <em>still<\/em> complain about immigrants and socialists all while stealing water for private profits and pushing neo-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northwest_Territorial_Imperative\">Northwest Territorial Imperative<\/a> projects (e.g. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Idaho_movement\">Greater Idaho<\/a>&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/State_of_Liberty\">Liberty State<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aren\u2019t new problems, and smug progressives in overwhelmingly white areas of the Pacific Northwest need to start looking hard at how it got that way, and why it stays that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-242a6232512e0d163f426722f3552e3e is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Klan recruited members by marketing itself as a means to celebrate and support that which most white Americans did already: go to church, get involved in civic groups and fraternal orders, participate in family life, and vote. The Klan would capitalize on people\u2019s insecurity that these activities were under threat from within and without, and offer itself (for a fee) as a kind of protector of tradition.
