{"id":157,"date":"2021-11-27T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T08:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/queersatanic.com\/?p=157"},"modified":"2021-11-27T00:01:00","modified_gmt":"2021-11-27T08:01:00","slug":"the-devil-went-down-to-the-south-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qs.gehenna.ynh.fr\/?p=157","title":{"rendered":"The Devil Went Down to the South&nbsp;Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New book confirms The Satanic Temple\u2019s co-founder Cevin Soling was among the \u201ccrackpots\u201d trying to be a cargo cult messiah on a small Pacific&nbsp;island <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-e35bc9629d5b1a53b7d9d5f072d022e4 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">In Vanuatu, there are people who say a messiah will one day arrive from a distant land, bringing the islands the prosperity they were denied by their former colonial rulers, Britain and France. In anthropological parlance, such beliefs are often labelled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/notesandqueries\/query\/0,5753,-1379,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cargo cults<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aa term fraught with condescension, framing these spiritual movements as religions constructed around the material wealth, the \u201ccargo\u201d, of the western world. Over the past 50 years, though, a steady stream of westerners have acted out such prophecies in the hope of gathering believers. As Ketty Napwatt, a Ni-Vanuatu activist and former politician, told me in 2014: <strong>\u201cWe have these crackpots showing up all the time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">The fantasy of being revered by people on the far side of the world is an old one. Early European explorers such as Captain Cook were supposedly received as divine beings by the local people whose lives they would upend. The dream endured from Robinson Crusoe to colonial fiction such as Kipling\u2019s white rajahs in the Kafiristan of <em>The Man Who Would be King<\/em>\u200a\u2014\u200aa deeply rooted idea of the west\u2019s divine right to rule.<br><br>We happened across our modern-day prophets by accident. <strong>Tonks and I had gone to Vanuatu in 2014 <\/strong>because we\u2019d read about villages there where the locals believe God is an American soldier.<\/p>\n<cite>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/27\/western-men-who-dream-of-being-south-pacific-kings-vanuatu-prophesy\">The western men who think they are South Pacific kings<\/a>&#8221; by Christopher Lord for <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the mid-2000s, future co-owner and founder of The Satanic Temple Cevin Soling (a.k.a. \u201cMalcolm Jarry\u201d) visited the South Pacific Island of Tanna to try to convince them he was returned messianic cargo cult figure John Frum as part of a project for Soling\u2019s company Spectacle Films. Indeed, in a speech to believers, the chief of Sulphur Bay described him as the \u201clast man\u201d who would reveal the destination of their movement. Soling had tried to turn the whole endeavour into a documentary, and even made necklaces with his own face printed on them.<br><br>Outsiders might think Ni-Vanuatu are gullible people, easily taken in by foreign soothsayers. But that\u2019s not the whole picture. <strong>There\u2019s a scene in Soling\u2019s film where one of the John Frum chiefs is examining the goods the foreigner has brought, pleased the cult appears to be working\u200a\u2014\u200ait just so happens the cargo has been brought by a wealthy American film-maker, not Frum<\/strong>. In our conversations with the chief, he evaded the question of whether Soling was the man they\u2019d been waiting for.<br><br>\u201cPeople tend to forget there is a huge amount of local politics on these islands,\u201d says Kirk Huffman, who worked as an anthropologist for the post-independence government in Vanuatu and was curator of its national museum. \u201cOne level of analysis is that these chiefs are using outsiders for their own benefit.\u201d<strong> Many communities believe the Frum prophecy and the arrival of a man like Soling, weighted down with offerings, can bolster a tribe\u2019s standing.<\/strong> \u201cSomething similar happened in Fiji in the early 19th century, with white people being asked by traditional chiefs to become their allies. These local leaders would use the outsiders, not least their arms and ammunition, to political ends,\u201d Huffman says.<\/p>\n<cite>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/27\/western-men-who-dream-of-being-south-pacific-kings-vanuatu-prophesy\">The western men who think they are South Pacific kings<\/a>&#8221; by Christopher Lord for <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having not seen more than the trailers, what we <em>didn\u2019t<\/em> know previously was that this was not a one-off event but apparently a <em>years-long<\/em> investment for Soling to try to be recognized as a cult leader to the islanders by bringing them gifts and attempting to fulfill a prophecy while shooting a movie about it centered on himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-369530af810a1bb081e531b2d6347241 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Frequent gifts sent by Americans who have visited the village only reinforce the cult&#8217;s conviction that one day Jon Frum will return, bringing with him American munificence.<br><br><strong>&#8220;This is how far we have to go right now to find a country which loves and respects America,&#8221; said Cevin Soling<\/strong>, a film maker from New York and one of the few foreigners to witness yesterday&#8217;s celebrations.<\/p>\n<cite>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/world\/america-still-the-land-of-gods-for-island-cargo-cult\/KTGACX2IFTGZOMOUQEKXE5IN4U\/\">America still the land of gods for island cargo cult<\/a>&#8221; by Nick Squires for <em>New Zealand Herald<\/em> (Feb. 15, 2007)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Soling first visited in 2007, which would be that trip he&#8217;s quoted in above, he continued to go there until <em>at least 2014 <\/em>when he ran into the book\/article authors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christopherlord.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christopher Lord<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jontonks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jon Tonks<\/a>. So, already fully into the swing of \u201cThe Satanic Temple\u201d stateside by then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soling\u2019s involvement may have lasted even longer given the presumably satirical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/build-a-nuclear-power-plant-in-vanuatu#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$525 million \u201cnuclear power plant fundraiser\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/130399824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accompanying video<\/a> Soling released to promote the second version of the film in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211128034000\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/cevinsoling\/status\/885105549175656448\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/queersatanic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"Cevin Soling\n@cevinsoling\nI am raising funds to build a nuclear power plant in Vanuatu. Help make one tribe's dream a reality. \n@indiegogo\" style=\"width:549px;height:602px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/build-a-nuclear-power-plant-in-vanuatu#\/\">IndieGoGo campaign<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, it\u2019s interesting that\u200a\u2014\u200aalong with not listing himself as owner of The Satanic Temple and related front companies \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QueerSatanic\/status\/1416403624033329153\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when he\u2019s self-promoting under his own name<\/a>, Cevin Soling doesn\u2019t seem to think it worthwhile to remind folk he attempted to fulfill the prophecy of John Frum and make a movie of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhibitionist colonialism in the service of trying to manipulate na\u00efve people into glorifying you is not exactly the best look. Then again, &#8220;trying&#8221; turns out to be the operative word in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"international-flight\">One more thing: the second chapter of Joe Laycock&#8217;s book about The Satanic Temple, <em>Speak of the Devil,<\/em> includes this anecdote from David Guinan, the director of what would become <em>Mr. Cevin and the Cargo Cult <\/em>(emphasis added):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-black-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-b36cf35b78757dda408272e3cb2a15ec is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">[Cevin Soling] was discussing Bush\u2019s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives with his friend and filmmaker David Guinan <strong>during an international flight in 2007<\/strong>. They discussed how the public would react if someone demanded federal funding for a \u201cSatanic soup kitchen.\u201d [Soling] thought about requesting federal funds for a \u201cSatanic youth outreach center for troubled teens\u201d that would bring teenagers off the streets by giving them Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest albums.
